Race Recap: Sea Isle 10 Mile Island Run (8.14.10)

by Mary & Christina on August 16, 2010

Over the years, it has become a tradition in our family to run in the Sea Isle 10 mile Island Run every summer.  It is a race that we look forward to all summer.  The course itself is 7 miles on the beach and 3 miles on the boardwalk.  The sand, although you are running on the hard/wet sand down by the water, makes this run much more difficult than the typical 10 miler.  Nonetheless, we always have a blast at this race.  A lot of people have parties for the run and sit out on their porches and on the beach, cheering the runners on.  Little kids line the beaches slapping the runners high-five and handing out orange slices.  It is really a great time! Afterwards, we always go out to eat at either Busch’s in Sea Isle or our personal favorite, Lobster House in Cape May.

Here is a breakdown of the race:

The online results say that we crossed the finish line in 1:18:26.03 (Mary) and 1:18:26.83 (Christina) but that is not completely accurate; we both started our Garmins about 30 seconds-1 minute before the starting line and our Garmin’s read 1:18 finish time…meaning that we really got somewhere in between 1:17- 1:17:30.  not quite sure what to go by…regardless….our finish time was somewhere in there– making our splits between 7:45-7:50

Comments: It seemed as though there were much more people at the starting line this year… usually the crowd breaks up right away but this year we were stuck in the crowd for the first 1.5 miles!!  That definitely slowed our time down a bit.  The sand also seemed more soft/wet than usual…which made for perfect conditions haha…NOT.  Nonetheless, we were both very happy with our time.  We had a blast at the race, as usual.  Usually, we are TOTALLY SPENT after this race.  This year, however, we both felt that we could have given it a LITTLE bit more. There was definitely something still left in the tank by the end of this race.  oh well…not too worried about it!! :)

QUESTION: do you have run in any races that have become a “tradition” for you and your family?  did you race this weekend?

Great job on the race guys! Running on sand is TOUGH. I don’t have any races that are “traditions” yet since I’ve only been racing for under a year, but that seems like it would be the most fun

Great race!

The only tradition in my family is to run the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving! We have only done it once, but that is the extent of running in my family ;)

I just found your blog and love that you combine three of my favorites: running, cooking and sisterhood!

The race sounds like a blast and I bet it’s even better when you get to share it with each other. (:

Great job on the run! That’s still a great time to finish the race in. Sadly, no races here have become a tradition. Maybe one day!
