420 South 2nd Street, Philadelphia
The other night Mary and I were thinking of a place to eat in Philly. It is kind of funny how Philly has hundreds and hundreds of restaurants and when you are trying to think of JUST one place to go, you cannot come up with anything! Mary suggested Stephen Starr‘s restaurant that opened up a few years ago, Pizzeria Stella. We both had been here before awhile ago. I do not remember loving this place the first time I went, but this time when we went…we realized how great their pizza actually is! Especially if you are adventurous and try some pizza combinations that you wouldn’t typically order. The atmosphere is also really nice inside. I love how you can see the chefs making the pizza right there out in the open. That way, they cant spit on your food! haha I am kidding, obviously…well sort of kidding anyway. It is just a nice view.
We shared the Romaine Salad with ricotta salata, cucumber, onion, cherry tomato, mint.
This was very good but didnt blow us out of the water or anything. I liked the the addition of mint to this salad…really added a unique flavor!
We also ordered two pizzas to share (they are relatively small).
Spinach Pizza: baby spinach, oven roasted tomato, mozzarella, pine nuts
I wasn’t sure about pine nuts on pizza but Mary assured me that it was a great combination. I trusted her and of course she was right! I loved this pizza! I was afraid I wouldn’t like it because there is no tomato sauce (and I absolutely love tomato sauce) but this was not a problem at all!
Tartufo Pizza: black truffle (mushroom), fontina, egg, parmesan
Yes, you heard right…EGG on PIZZA! Sounds strange but it is AWESOME! Trust me. And if you didn’t know…truffles are type of mushroom..they are pretty rare (and rather expensive) but delicious. The truffles really gave this pizza such an AWESOME flavor. Highly recommend this one. It was pretty neat… when the server brought this pizza out to our table there an egg on top that she poked and spread the yolk all around the pizza…mmm…mmm.
The below photo is not mine…I found it online– I just wanted to show you what the pizza looks like before it is served and before the egg is smeared all over the pizza.
and last but not least….Homemade gelato!!! I got stracciatella (left) and Mary got pumpkin (right). I LOVED mine (better than Mary’s) but Mary liked her gelato better…so it worked out! Both were awesome though. I never had stracciatella (it is sort of like American chocolate chip ice cream but much better)- and I was not dissapointed. I almost shed a tear or two when I got to the bottom of my cup. Mary said that this was the best pumpkin gelato she has ever tasted…and suprisingly enough- she has tasted quite a few pumpkin flavored gelatos!
P.S. What are your favorite toppings to add to Pizza? Have you ever tried a really unique Pizza…if so…what was it?
