This spring I dined at Le Virtu for the first time. Le Virtu is located in South Philly on Passyunk Avenue. Their cuisine is inspired by the Abruzzo region of Italy.
We started with two appetizers–a baby arugula salad and a cheese & honey plate. We really enjoyed both of these appetizers. I just love the combination of a sharp cheese and honey.
Insalata di rucola Baby arugula, sliced Bartlett pears, mostocotto, shaved Abruzzese canestrato pecorino
Pecorino Cheese with Chestnut Honey and Pears
Since Le Virtu makes all of their pastas in-house and we love pasta, we both decided to order pasta dishes. While I thought the pasta dishes were good, I did not think that they were outstanding. I thought that the Spaghetti & Shrimp dish was severely lacking in shrimp. At most I would say that there were 4 shrimp in the entire dish. Sorry, Le Virtu, but I think that Amis & Osteria do pasta better. I would definitely give Le Virtu another try…maybe I just ordered the wrong pasta.
Spaghetti in a lemon butter sauce with rock shrimp
Ribbon-shaped pasta, braised Lancaster County rabbit ragu
Semifreddo al torrone di cioccolato- Chocolate torrone semifreddo, salted caramel sauce, whipped cream
I thought that this dessert was good but definitely not knock your socks off good. The description of the dessert sounds better than it actually tastes. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t that it was not good, I just didn’t think that it was anything incredible.
All in all, we enjoyed our dinner and I would return; although, I would definitely try a different entree next time as I was not too impressed with the shrimp & pasta dish.
