Battle of the Sunscreen

Battle of the Sunscreen

Sephora recently sent me a “sunscreen sample bag”.  When I received it, I had the idea to sample each sunscreen in the bag each day (and also included some of my own sunscreens that I had at home) to determine which one reigned supreme.  Finding a good sunscreen is no easy task.  I get asked ALL of the time “What sunscreen should I get? I can never find one that I like!”. SO many sunscreens are sticky/thick/gooey/etc.  So….without further adieu, THE BATTLE OF THE SUNSCREENS….

THE BEST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK

REPLENIX ANTIOXIDANT SUNSCREEN MOISTURIZER

  1. NEUTROGENA CLEAR FACE 3 ounces for $11.99 (SPF 55)
    • This is a great sunscreen for people who are prone to breakouts. It goes on light and has a nice and high SPF.  There is not anything crazily awesome about this one but it was light, non-sticky and doesnt make me breakout. I’ll take it!
    • Helioplex Technology: “Avobenzone is one of the best UVA sunscreen ingredients approved by the FDA, but it is highly unstable when exposed to sunlight. Neutrogena was among the first in the US market to introduce sun protection in which Avobenzone was stabilized using Oxybenzone and DEHN, effectively providing better, longer protection from harmful UVA rays. This breakthrough technology was called Helioplex®.”
  2. NEUTROGENA AGE SHIELD FACE 12 ounces for $12.99 (SPF 110)
    • Ugh I regret buying this. It could not get more thick and sticky.  I was really surprised by this one because usually ANYTHING Neutrogena is safe…but I guess I was proven wrong. Do not buy this.
  3. NEUTROGENA COOL DRY SPORT 5 ounces for $11.49 (SPF 70)
    • This is Neutrogena’s newest line.  I didnt really prefer it for my face (I prefer the next one- Sport Face- for the face) but it was great on my body.
  4. NEUTROGENA SPORT FACE 2.5 ounces for $11.49 (SPF 70+)
    • This is a great sunscreen for when you are working out outdoors. It goes on nice and smooth and does not leave a sticky feeling at all. Best of all, it does not drip into your eyes! Win
  5. NEUTOGENA ULTRA SHEER 3 ounces $12.49 (SPF 85+)
    • This is another great line by Neutrogena.  Again, I do not prefer  this for my face as it is a LITTLE too thick for me but this is a fantastic body sunscreen.
  6. CETAPHIL DERMACONTROL 4 ounces for $19.99 (SPF 30)
    • This is a great, light (and relatively cheap) everyday moisturizer and sunscreen for people with acne prone skin.  I recommend this to a lot of my acne patients and use it myself. Just like the Neutrogena Clear Face, there is not anything crazily awesome about this one but it was light, non-sticky and doesnt make me breakout.
  7. SHISEIDO 3.3 ounces for $40.00 (SPF 50+)
    • Fantastic water-resistant and sweat-resistant sunscreen for the face and body. Definitely worth the extra splurge.
  8. MURAD VITAMIN C 1.7 ounces for $60 (SPF 30)
    • Okay- this smells amazing (think orangey and fresh) and feels good on skin.  There is a tad hint of sticky feeling to it when you first put it on but it goes away quickly.  The price, however, is steep.  If you have the money, go for it.
    • Other Perks: includes antioxidant- Vitamin C; no sulfates
  9. MURAD INVISIBLUR 1 ounce for $65 (SPF 30)
    • This is super super light and acts as a primer, too.  It makes your skin feel soooo nice and smooth! The price  on the other hand, I could do without!
    • Other Perks: anti-aging properties
    • Similar Products: Algenist sublime defense & Replenix Ultimatte Perfection
  10. MD SOLAR SCIENCES 1.7 ounces for $32 (SPF 30)
    • This reminds me of the Algenist sublime defense, Replenix Ultimatte Perfection and Murad Invisiblur.  It is nice and smooth and make your skin matte.
    • Other Perks: hypoallergenic, no sulfates, no parabens; water resistant for up to 80 minutes
  11. COOLA 1.7 ounces for $36 (SPF 30)
    • I am a big fan of ALL Coola Products.  This particular one is nice because you can apply it over your make-up to “set it”.  It feels like nothing on your skin.
    • Other Perks: 70% organic; paraben free, sulfate free
  12. JOSIE MARAN ARGAN DAILY MOISTURIZER 2 ounces for $32 or 4 ounces for $54 (SPF 47)
    • This has a nice smell going on, spreads easily and is not sticky
  13. JACK BLACK 3.3 ounces for $28 (SPF 20)
    • Smelled nice. Not Sticky. But nothing special.
  14. REPLENIX ULTIMATTE PERFECTION 1.5 ounces for $32.25 (SPF 50+)
    • ABSOLUTELY LOVEDDDDD THIS!!!!!! It felt amazing going on the skin and actually helped to even out the skin tone a bit.  It is considered a “BB cream”
    • Other Perks: can be used as a primer; has antioxidants
    • Similar Products: Algenist sublime defense & Murad Invisiblur
    • Pricey but worth the money
  15. REPLENIX ANTIOXIDANT SUNSCREEN MOISTURIZER 4 ounces for $28.13 (SPF 50+)
    • This is definitely the most bang for your buck. This is a great sunscreen for the face AND body. Does not feel sticky AT ALL.  I did like the Replenix Ultimatte (above) for the face better than this one but if you are going for ONE, this is the one.
  16. ALGENIST REPAIRING TINT AND RADIANCE 1.3 ounces for $42 (SPF 30)
    • Not worth the money. It is just okay and for the price, not worth it.
  17. SUPERGOOP EVERYDAY BROAD SPECTRUM SUNSCREEN SPF 50 2.4 ounces $19 or 18 ounces for $48 (SPF 50)
    • Not a fan. Don’t like the name of the company either…Supergoop? Is that supposed to make me want this?  It wasn’t awful but wasn’t anything to write home about. Next.
  18. DRUNK ELEPHANT 3.3 ounces $28 (SPF 30)
    • Really did not like this. Funky name which I liked but the product was THUMBS DOWN.
  19. KORRES 1.69 ounces for $35 (SPF 30)
    • Smelled nice but was a little sticky- not worth the price
  20. RADICAL SKIN PERFECTING SCREEN 1.35 ounces for $55 (SPF 30)
    • Smelled a little (in a bad way). Just okay. Nothing special
  21. ALGENIST SUBLIME DEFENSE 2 ounces $75
    • Feels so great on the skin going on….nice and smooth and like the other products below, has a matte finish.  The price on the other hand…I could do without!
    • Other Perks: sulfate free, paraben free,
    • Similar Products: Murad Vitamin C, Replenix Ultimatte
