The Engagment Story

The Engagment Story

This past week has been an absolute whirlwind.  Harry & I got engaged on Saturday 8/8/15.  I am so so happy! It feels very surreal, even still.  Harry asked me “down the shore” at the Longport Inlet “Point”.  My family is from Atlantic City and Margate, NJ so the shore is a very special place for me. The Point is also a spot that I love to run to- it is so beautiful and relaxing.  Also, as many of you know, I am a bit obsessed with my pup, Riley.  Harry is too!  Whenever Riley sees Harry for the first time in awhile, she always cries out of excitement- so cute.  Anyway, Harry asked me if I wanted to take Riley to the beach to play fetch- as we always do.  As we were throwing the tennis ball, I didnt quite catch Riley’s new name tag so Harry eventually turned to me and nervously said, “Hey, did Riley get a new name tag?”  As soon as he said that, I knew.  I got nervous and started to shake a bit and cry (out of excitement, course!). He got down on one knee and I was so nervous that I do not even remember what he said but afterwards he told what he said: “Christina Marie Ponzio, we have dated for 4 years now and you are the most important thing in my life and I want to make you mine forever. Will you marry me?” Of course I said yes.  Oh, and he accidentally put the ring on my right hand at first! ha! I was so nervous that I thought that was correct, too!

A couple nearby saw the whole thing go down and snapped a few photos.

Harry and I will have been dating for almost 5 years once we get married on 11/19/16. It will be officially 5 years on 12/23/16.  We met in Physician Assistant school at PCOM in Philadelphia.  We started school in June 2011 and we didnt start to talk until that fall. I noticed him immediately but I was focused on my school work and sort of ignored him.  Once he started talking to me, I remember my friend Jen telling me that she thought he had a crush on me and I didnt believe it.  I honestly thought- why would someone like that like me?  Talk about low self esteem haha.  He eventually asked me to go to the Flyers game with him and his two friends and the week after that I asked him if I could take him out to dinner (we went to Osteria!) for his birthday.  I was SO nervous to ask him but when I finally got up the nerve to ask, he was so excited that I did. I still remember him telling me at school on the day that I was taking him out, that he was so excited for that night.  That made me so happy when he said that. I remember thinking to myself "really, you are excited!?!?".  Look at me, asking boys out!

Everything with Harry, from the very beginning, has always seemed so natural.  He is my best friend and we have gotten through a lot together.  Everyone always thinks that our relationship has been nothing but happiness and sunshine.  Of course not. No relationship is.  We have been through our fair share of “bumps in the road”.  One of which, was our long distance relationship.  Harry is a Physician Assistant for the Marines in Camp Lejeune, NC.  He has also been deployed once and is going again soon.  It isn’t fun but when it is all said and done, I think its the reason we are still together.  This has put our relationship to the “test” and has made me realize just how much I love Harry.  Once I realized how much Harry meant to me and that he was worth waiting for, nothing could separate us. I knew he was “THE ONE”.  We have another deployment to get through and as much as that will be hard, I am okay with it.  I know where we stand and I will be here waiting for him when he returns home.  That is not to say however, that I am not counting down the days until we can live with each other for good!
